The annual ‘Battle of Flowers’ event which takes place on the Channel Island of Jersey each August, could this year feature a float devoted to Abu Dhabi.
The plan was outlined by Jersey’s Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Treasury & Resources, Senator Philip Ozouf during a meeting with His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA).
Senator Ozouf met with Sheikh Sultan during his visit to the UAE capital for the official opening of the Jersey Finance representative office in Abu Dhabi – the second overseas office of the non-profit-organisation after Hong Kong.
Jersey – an island with finance and tourism as key industries – is looking to build two-way tourism links with Abu Dhabi and Senator Ozouf said he is pushing to have a float in the annual flower spectacular created to reflect the UAE capital’s attractions.
“This will also serve to establish greater awareness of our new office in Abu Dhabi,” he said.
Jersey’s ‘Battle of Flowers, consists of two parades – one the Grand Parade, the other the Moonlight Parade. The parades feature a line-up of 45-feet long floats in which various scenes and themes are depicted from flower creations and in which competitors vie for the Prix d’Honneur. The spectacular, a major tourism draw on the island, was first established in 1902 to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward V11 and Queen Alexandra of Britain.
