Center Of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi Announces Official Opening Of Four Facilities In Al Ain

The Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi has announced the official opening of the four facilities in Al Ain, including: The Clinical Waste Incinerator, Fallen Stock Incinerator, the Sanitary Landfill and the Crushing Plant Facility at the sites area in and around Al Ain city.

The Clinical Waste Incinerator wherein medical wastes shall be collected from all hospital and clinics both private and public in Al Ain and its regions, through the contractor (STAR INTERNATIONAL).

These health care facilitates numbering approximately 150 hospitals and clinics and generate approximately 5 tonnes of hazardous medical wastes per day which are transported in refrigerated transport vehicles to the incinerator plant, situated almost 35 km from the town center in special containers that are supplied to the hospitals.

At the plant all wastes are incinerated in 2 lines of 250 kg/hr capacity, at temperatures ranging in excess of 850-1150C wherein the medical wastes are transformed into ash of two types, bottom ash and fly ash. The ash is then sent to the sanitary landfill and the hazardous waste cell whilst flue gas emissions are purified and cleaned in accordance with international standards and laws followed in the UAE.

The fallen stock incinerator accepts fallen stock or dead animals collected from Al Ain and its regions by contractors responsible for waste collection services.

Statistics indicate that approximately 2100 large animals and 19550 small to medium size animals are transported in special transport vehicles to the fallen stock incinerator located 35 km from the town center. The fallen stock facility incinerate dead animals through 2 lines with the capacity of 650 kg/hr at temperatures exceed of 850 degrees C.

Residual bottom ash is sent to the sanitary landfill for disposal and flue gas emissions are monitored and controlled in accordance with international standards and laws followed in the UAE.

The sanitary landfill has been designed to receive the rejects generated by the Sorting Station and Compost Plant Facility and the Bottom Ash and Fly Ash generated by the Medical Waste Incinerator. The facility will also receive the Ash generated by the Fallen Stock Incinerator.

The Municipal Solid Waste rejects from the Sorting Station and Compost Plant is placed in a single lined cell at the landfill facility and the waste is covered on a daily basis to prevent the incidence of flies, insects & odour. The Fly Ash designated as Hazardous Waste is received in specially designed double lined bag and is placed in a special cell which is also double lined to protect the ground water resources from any contamination.

The Crushing Plant facility has been designed to receive the Construction and Demolition Waste generated by Al-Ain and its Region. The plant has a capacity to process 2000 tons/day of C&D waste and to produce aggregates of different sizes which shall be sold to road works and construction companies. The rejects from the process consisting of dust size particles will be used as a cover material at the Sanitary Landfill. Recyclable materials like iron, wood, plastics etc shall also be recovered to be recycled and reuse.

Environmental Control and Monitoring Programs approved by the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi is practiced at both the facility in order to protect the Ground Water Resources, Land and Air from any contamination.
