Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum attended this evening a ceremony held to honour winners of the Zayed International Prize for Environment. Also present were Dubai Crown Prince H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea and Korea’s First Lady.
Minister of Environment and Water and Chair of the Prize Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahd spoke about the importance of the prize and thanked its patron His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his unlimited support and his keenness on promoting the green growth concept and sustainable development.
The Prize’s Head Judge Dr Klaus Toepfer praised Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for the future of the world’s environment. He congratulated the winners of the 5th cycle of the Zayed International Prize for Environment, including President Lee Myung-bak.
Sheikh Mohammed watched a documentary about President Lee Myung-bak and congratulated him on winning the prize. He also greeted other winners of the prize including Sir Partha Dasgupta, winner of the Prize for Scientific and technological achievements in environment category, Dr. Mathis Wackernagel and Prof. Najib Saab from Lebanon who shared the Prize for category of Environmental action leading to positive change in society.
President Lee Myung-bak lauded in a speech the objectives of Zayed International Prize for Environment and referred to the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for turning arid desert into a lush green.
He said he was extremely honoured to win "this prominent international award," calling on the world to pay more attention to environment and to protect the earth against climate change, a key cause for environment deterioration.
He also said that the UAE and Republic of Korea were two of the pioneering countries in the environmental fields as they adopt serious and sincere steps for sustainable development.
