Khalifa University will launch its Distinguished Speaker Series on Science, Technology and Society this coming Sunday, 13 March. The talk will be delivered by Dr. Graham Allison, Director of Harvard University’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. This lecture will address the looming danger of a nuclear catastrophe, focusing on the threat posed by the nuclear programs of, Iran, Pakistan, and North Korea.
Aside from directing the Belfer Center, Dr. Allison is the Douglas Dillon Professor of Government at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Dr. Allison was founding Dean of the modern Kennedy School, turning a small, undefined program into one of the world’s leading professional schools of public policy and government.
Among a number of important roles in United States defense policy, Dr. Allison served as Assistant Secretary of Defense in the first Clinton Administration. He has the sole distinction of having twice been awarded the Defense Department’s highest civilian award: the Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service.
Dr. Allison’s latest book is Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe, now in its third printing and selected by the New York Times as one of the "100 most notable books of 2004." It presents a strategy for preventing nuclear terrorism organized under a doctrine of "Three Nos:" no loose nukes; no new nascent nukes; and no new nuclear weapons states. Dr. Allison’s first book, Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis, first published in 1971, and significantly revised and reissued in 1999, ranks among the bestsellers in 20th century political science with more than 400,000 copies in print.

Khalifa University recently launched a Masters program in Nuclear Engineering as well as academic offerings in International and Civil Security.
