Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi and environmental consultant 7th Sense have completed their collaboration on an energy modeling study aimed at establishing energy benchmarks for 4-star hotels. Cristal Hotel performed well against the consumption standards used in the study, thus maintaining its status as one of the emirate’s most environmentally-responsible hospitality organisations.
A Thermal Analysis Simulation software was used to profile Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi’s energy performance based on architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and operational parameters. The study adopted four consumption performance categories, namely ‘Excellent,’ ‘Satisfactory,’ ‘High,’ and ‘Excessive.’ It also evaluated the use and impact of various sustainability approaches such as solar systems, architectural modifications and natural ventilation.
The results were presented during the Green Hotels Workshop organized by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) in late January 2011 and will be tapped to set appropriate energy benchmarks for hotels in the region.
“Our involvement in the 7th Sense study gave us a better understanding of our energy strategies and their performance against ADTA’s Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) targets. The UAE is exerting maximum effort to reduce its high ecological footprint, and we want the hospitality sector to be a major contributor to this cause. The study results have given us invaluable insights on how to achieve ADTA’s EHSMS goals,” said Peter Blackburn, CEO, Cristal Hotels and Resorts.
ADTA’s ‘Green Hotel’ Program calls for 10 per cent energy reduction, 20 per cent less water consumption and a 20 per cent drop in waste production. Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi has adopted various strategies to meet these targets. It was the first hotel in the emirate to recycle six waste products (paper, plastics, aluminum cans, glass, Tetra Pak packaging, and cartridges and toners) and use Compact Fluorescent Lamps for its guest rooms. The hotel was able to limit its energy consumption increase to only 9 per cent between 2009 and 2010 despite achieving a 26 per cent rise in occupancy for the same period through optimized heating, ventilation, air conditioning and water use.
Conveniently located within Abu Dhabi’s downtown banking district, Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi opened in late 2009 as a premier provider of deluxe accommodations for business and weekend travelers. The hotel offers 192 rooms and suites, food and beverage outlets, a business centre and meeting rooms, underground parking, and leisure and lifestyle amenities such as an indoor pool, Figure 8 Health Club and the exclusive Cristal Spa. Cristal Hotels and Resorts is also preparing to open Cristal Salam Hotel in Abu Dhabi, its second hotel in the UAE, mid of this year to build on the huge success of Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi.
