To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, the British Council will be organising free public screenings of the film Pink Saris by UK director Kim Longinotto, in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women over the years and the British Council in the UAE will join organisations globally, and in the United Arab Emirates, to promote and create awareness of women’s issues.
“The British Council is passionately dedicated to raising awareness of social issues and how those could impact society at large. The film screenings of Pink Saris aim to do just that, by recognising the need to share experiences and approaches in order to tackle the continuing inequalities and discrimination faced by marginalised groups in societies worldwide,” said Michel Bechara, Director of Projects, British Council UAE.
“We are happy to work with our partners here to proudly put the UAE on the map of activities celebrating the International Women’s Day, especially through a film that found inspirational women, and which gave visibility to those individuals who are getting on with their lives but slowly changing ideas and attitudes to women in their society, and who are also demonstrating that women are just as capable as men of succeeding in demanding roles and challenging professions. I see this film an invitation by great UK filmmaker, Kim Longinotto, to initiate dialogues with people from various social sectors to make connections across cultures and to bring people together to share perspectives and develop active networks and projects around common interests,” added Bechara.
Pink Saris is acclaimed director Kim Longinotto’s latest foray into the lives of extraordinary women. The movie follows the leader of the “Pink Gang” who brings her own brand of justice to the streets of Uttar Pradesh, India, combating violence against women.
“I’m so happy to think about Pink Saris being screened in the UAE and I’m a bit sad that I can’t be there. I hope everyone will enjoy the film and watch lead character Sampat and see what a complicated, contradictory yet inspirational person she is. Change is a subtle, shifting thing, it needs people like Sampat to stand up and defy superstition, tradition and authority. But it happens in countless other, often hidden, ways; in families, in villages, in cities all over the world. Pink Saris is a reflection of that longing for change,” said Kim Longinotto, Director, Pink Saris.
