The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) is highlighting a pioneering experiment using cutting-edge solar technologies to desalinate water in the desert.
The agency is currently testing new solar desalination techniques at 30 locations across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, as part of a trial which is thought to be the largest in the world.
Solar desalination is a zero-carbon process and new technological advances in solar technology are helping to overcome previous problems such as excessive temperatures and dust which previously impaired the operational efficiency of older-style solar panels.
These experimental solar-powered desalination facilities in Hameem and Sweihan show us that we can reduce the negative impact of water desalination on the environment as well as help to reduce the cost of water production.
Each unit generates an average of 35 kilowatts per hour, making a total of 1050 kilo-watt/hour.
