Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi is reaffirming its commitment to conserving the natural environment by adopting over a thousand fish that have made the 700-metre waterway that connects the entire Qaryat Al Beri complex home.

The waterway is home to over a thousand fish of many sizes and species. A team from the Engineering department has been ensuring the welfare of the fish by feeding them every morning. Guests enjoying a ride on the motorised abras can often see the fish as they enjoy their journey through the complex. The motorised abras run on electricity and emits zero carbon and pollution that will endanger aquatic life.

Deep-cleaning the waterway has proven to be quite a task as the engineers have to build a makeshift dam to house the aquatic life before they drain the water. To protect the health of the fish, no chemicals are added to the water.

The initiative to house the fish long-term is the most recent initiative undertaken by the hotel to reaffirm its commitment to being socially responsible.

In addition, both Shangri-La Hotel and Traders Hotel have decreased energy usage by introducing energy-saving bulbs. 1,113 fifty-wattage halogen bulbs have been replaced by five-wattage LED bulbs, resulting in the savings of 438,745 kilowatts of energy produced annually. That is the equivalent of 120 tonnes of carbon dioxide gas emissions saved every year.
