Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has shortlisted 13 financially viable school operators from the 20 applications received in response to a June announcement offering six land plots on lease for the development of new private schools in Khalifa City B and Mohamed bin Zayed City. The initial pre-approval screening assessed applicants on basic acceptance criteria, with a focus on the financial ability to build and operate high-quality schools. These pre-approved schools will now proceed to the next stage in which they will submit an application for a provisional license for a new private school. License applications will be judged on an assessment of the operator’s qualifications and ability to run a high-quality educational institution, and on the presentation of a strong financial and educational plan. From these thirteen applications, six applications will be selected based on the strength of their application. Successful applicants must also demonstrate the ability to have the construction and inspection of schools on the awarded school plot completed by August 1, 2013.
Executive Director of Private Schools & Quality Assurance Division at ADEC Yousif Al Sheryani said: “This initiative is one of many actions ADEC is taking to actively increase school capacity in the private sector in order to meet the growing demand for private school places. It is of highest priority for us to increase both quality and access to private schools in the Emirate.”
While the opportunity to submit tender for the previously announced land plots has expired, ADEC encourages interested school owners and operators to submit applications to join its list of pre-qualified operators.
“By continually developing this list of pre-approved financially capable education providers we can support a more efficient and timely process in awarding licenses for school buildings and land plots. In order to pass this first level of screening, applicants must demonstrate a basic financial capacity to successfully open and operate a school while meeting ADEC’s quality standards. Working with this existing list of qualified operators helps us manage the awarding of school buildings and land plots in a much more efficient timeframe,” Al Sheryani added.
Interested investors can pick up pre-qualification applications from ADEC’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. All applications will be evaluated by a selection committee at ADEC, after which shortlisted firms will have to obtain the tender documents to pursue the next step of the licensing process.
