ADEC’s Preparations For First Trimester Exams Finalized
(29 November 2010)

Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) approved the first trimester exam schedule for public schools, private schools that follow the MoE’s curriculum, adult education centers, family development institutions and home learners.

Mr. Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri, ADEC’s Executive Director of School Operations, announced that G10 and G11 student exams at public schools will start on Tuesday, December 7 and end on Wednesday, December 15, while exams for G6-G9 students will be held during the period from Sunday, December 12 until Thursday, December 16.

For private schools that follow the MoE’s curriculum, adult education centers and home learners, the first trimester exams for Grade 6-11 students will be held during the period 12-16 December.

G12 students across all educational institutions will attend their exams from December 7 until December 16.
Al Dhaheri pointed out that for the first time ever, exams will be given as part of the regular school day, and each will last for 45 minutes (one period only) for G6-G9 students attending public schools, so that students can resume their school day normally after taking each exam. This comes in line with ADEC’s continuous assessment process as part of its 10-year strategic plan aiming at developing the educational system in Abu Dhabi.”

“ADEC is keen to achieve the best interests of students by integrating exams into the school day in order not to interrupt the study plans. Moreover, this will help ensure that students feel at ease while taking exams as part of their regular school day,” Al Dhaheri added.

The first trimester exam results for all grades will be announced at the beginning of the second trimester i.e. during the first week of January 2011, Mr. Al Dhaheri pointed out.

ADEC approved a new method for calculating the student year grade to be implemented this school year for the first time, Al Dhaheri announced. “The result of continuous assessment throughout the school year will account for 60% of the year’s total grade while the third trimester exam results will represent the remaining 40%.”

Mr. Al Dhaheri emphasized that ADEC has completed its preparations for holding the first trimester exams in Abu Dhabi schools, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

G12 students enrolled in private schools and adult education centers as well as home learners shall be examined at public schools in Abu Dhabi according to their geographical locations and capacity of schools, indicated Al Dhaheri. “School principals, being the heads of exam committees, shall be responsible for ensuring smooth exam workflow in their schools. Principals have to form the appropriate exam committees and define the responsibilities of each”, added Al Dhaheri.

"On behalf of ADEC, I wish our students and learners all the best on their first trimester exams,” Al Dhaheri concluded.

Exams for G6-G9 female students at public schools will be held during the first period, while male students will have their exams at the second period.

For private schools that follow the MoE’s curriculum, family development institutions’ adult education centers and home learners, the exams for Grade 6-11 students will start at 8:30 am and will last for 90 minutes.

G6-9 students at private schools and family development institutions’ adult education centers will be examined in one subject per day, while G10 and G11 students will take exams in two subjects during the first two days and one subject per day during the three remaining days.

The exams for learners at adult education centers will start on December 12 and each will last from 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm. G7-9 students will be examined in one subject per day. G10 and G11 students will take exams in two subjects during the first two days and one subject per day during the remaining days.

Home learners will take their exams starting from December 12, and each will last from 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm. G7-9 students will be examined in two subjects per day for the first three days and one subject per day for the two remaining days. G10 and G11 students will take two exams per day and each exam will last until 8:00 pm.

The total number of G6-G12 students to be examined during the first trimester across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi includes 69,391 students at public schools and 14,231 students at adult education centers, family development institutions and home learners.

ADEC has issued a circular with the exam schedule which was distributed to all schools. The exam schedule of each grade will be available at ADEC’s website in Arabic and English.
