TRA Launches Broadband Performance Testing Initiative
(23 November 2010)

In accordance with the values of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) aiming to enhance transparency and creditability within the ICT sector in the UAE, the authority launches the broadband performance test initiative in collaboration with the licensees. The initiative mirrors TRA devotion to promote an intelligible environment through allowing internet users to test their internet connectivity speed provided by their internet service providers.

The Broadband performance test, which is available through the TRA website detects automatically the internet service provider, and tests accordingly the connectivity speed. However, in order to reach the maximum results, there are some requirements that should be taking care of, before conducting the test.

Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim commented on the new initiative saying: "Since its inception, TRA is keen to deal with all the ICT relevant partners in a transparent way. It is our duty as a regulatory body to ensure that laws and regulations are implemented in the right way." The broadband performance test provides the users with an indication regarding the speed of their broadband connection through measuring the download speed which determines the speed of receiving files from the internet and the upload speed which verifies the speed of sending files to the internet. It also performs a Ping test to measure the time it takes to get a response from the ISP’s test server.

In order to achieve trustworthy results, it is highly recommended repeating the test up to four times while comparing the measured results. Yet few necessities are required before carrying out the test such as the version of the internet browser, a web browser supports Flash version 8+ and JavaScript.

Moreover, users need to turn off all the running applications that might consume bandwidth, make sure to place the computer as close as possible to the access point (wireless router) in order to have high signal strength. Furthermore, using a direct connection instead of wireless is recommended.

The application is designed to provide accurate results as possible. However, there are some out of control outages that can affect the accuracy of the results obtained.
