ADIPEC Opens Tomorrow: ADNOC Focus On ’The Tree Of Energy’
(31 October 2010)

The world’s second largest Oil and Gas industry event, ADIPEC 2010, opens at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on Monday 1st November. It runs until Thursday 4th November. Being held under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the event includes both an exhibition and a conference.

At the exhibition, over 1,500 companies from around the world, including both many major international oil companies and companies from the region, like the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, ADNOC Group of companies, and leading manufacturers and suppliers, will provide insights into the latest technologies in use and will brief visitors on current developments in the industry.

The focus of participation by Abu Dhabi in the exhibition will be the stand for the ADNOC Group of companies, which has been specially designed this year around the idea of ‘The Tree of Energy.’ In devising the stand, several underlying principles have been identified as key components.

The first is the idea of ‘the Tree of Energy’ itself, with the date-palm being selected as the type of tree to be portrayed. The date-palm is intimately related to the territory, history and culture of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in which oil has taken the lead in making possible the massive growth of the local economy. The date palm is also a reminder of the need for the sustainable use of resources and of the conservation of the environment. The Tree of Energy is situated in the centre of a large courtyard, with surrounding steps and seating areas.

Another principle is that of sustainability and cost effectiveness. The stand has been built of components that can be re-used, either in whole or in part, for future events, such as other exhibitions or trade fairs, or for displays at academic institutions or for in-house workshops and training courses.

By adopting this approach, the ADNOC Group will be able to maintain continuity in terms of the way in which it is presented at such events, with additional relevance also to important themes such as education, sustainability, technical excellence and security.

A third requirement is that the stand should contain inter-active elements, allowing visitors greater access to information. To achieve this, the ceiling of the stand is a large and unique interactive surface. On this, the logos of the ADNOC Group companies will be placed at cardinal points. When these are touched, the scene on the ceiling changes, with special spaces being lit up to display information about the Group and its companies.

Making use of these, the stand aims to perform an educational and cultural function. While welcoming all visitors, it is also focused, in particular, on the objective of informing younger visitors about the ADNOC Group as a whole, in the hope that they will be encouraged to learn about the wide variety of careers open to them within the ADNOC Group.

The design of the stand is also intended to encourage visitors to make use of the space as a place to meet and discuss. To achieve this, the courtyard area is provided with seating, making an ideal place for small meetings and discussions.

Also part of ADIPEC 2010 is its conference, organized in conjunction with the Society of Petroleum Engineers, SPE. This year, under the chairmanship of the Chief Executive Officer of the Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations, ADCO, Mr. Abdul Muniem Saif Al Kindi, the conference has been structured around three main themes: Sub-surface, Surface and Vision. Over 260 speakers are expected to present papers while there are also numerous poster displays, providing new insights into the industry. Many of these will come from employees of the ADNOC Group.

The first ADIPEC was held in Abu Dhabi in 1984. Since then, taking place every two years, it has grown dramatically, especially since a move to the Exhibition Centre in 1996 moving to the Exhibition Centre in 1996. In that year, the exhibition only occupied 5,000 sq. meters of space, but since the move to the new ADNEC premises in 2008, it now occupied 60,000 sq. meters and the number of companies exhibiting has risen from around 500 to over 1,500. Over the same period, the number of conference delegates rose from 1,500 to 4,000 and the number of trade and industry visitors from 5,000 to 40,000, from over 90 countries.
