(30 October 2010)

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has unveiled a new Masters Degree programme in Special Education to address the need for qualified teachers, as well as the implementation of new approaches in inclusion in the field of special education in the country.

Launched on the sidelines of the International Conference on Special Education held at Abu Dhabi University from 30 th to 31 st October, the new degree programme will equip teachers to develop strategic plans in different areas of interest as well as to provide and lead professional development programmes in special education. Scheduled to be offered in 2011, future graduates of the programme are also expected to demonstrate organised practical work in the field, including providing special education services that will help special needs’ families, communities and institutions.

"Education is critical to the nation’s growth and development, and it is our responsibility to promote and develop the exceptional abilities and talents of our students," said Dr. Nabil Ibrahim, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University. "Addressing this issue is paramount to Abu Dhabi University; hence, we are working on Masters and Doctoral programmes that will equip teachers in handling gifted and special needs students.

"Through this latest programme we hope to encourage more teachers to enter this field. The public and private schools in the region, particularly in the UAE, have started opening special classes with focus on inclusion of gifted and special needs students in normal classes. This trend will require qualified teachers in the field and the new Masters Degree in Special Education is developed to produce competent and skilled people who will adequately nurture students who posses excellent abilities, in addition to those with special needs," he added.

The new programme is developed based on international standards from major universities in Michigan, Ohio and Florida, USA; London Metropolitan University and others. It is also carefully reviewed and evaluated by qualified teams in special education from the USA.
