Emirates Post has issued commemorative stamps celebrating the majesty and architectural beauty of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi.
The stamps, issued in denominations of AED 1 and AED 5, are available in all post offices in the UAE. First Day Covers, priced at AED 7, and Souvenir Sheets of AED 25 each, can be purchased at main post offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai (Karama and Deira).
“Emirates Post is honoured to issue stamps on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, an imposing Islamic and national landmark in Abu Dhabi. It is also one of the most important architectural treasures of modern UAE, and one of the most beautiful religious structures in the world, conceived by the late President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the father of UAE.”
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque has been seen as a “globally unifying” landmark from its conception to completion, bringing together designers, features, materials and suppliers from nearly every corner of the globe: Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, Turkey, Iran, China, Greece and the UAE.
The Mosque can accommodate up to 40,960 worshippers and covers an area of 22,412 square meters which is equivalent to the size of five football pitches. More than 3,000 workers and 38 global construction companies were involved in its construction.
The Mosque’s initial architectural design was Moroccan, but it evolved to include many global features, including exterior walls that are of traditional Turkish design. Natural materials were chosen for its design and construction, which include marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics.
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque features 82 white marble domes. Majestic minarets standing 107 metres tall are built around the four corners of the Mosque.
