A delegation from Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Center was invited to the United States of America by the federal entity, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The visit gave both parties the opportunity to discuss ways of cooperation in several issues related to occupational health and safety.
Abu Dhabi EHS Center was established by the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi Emirate in February 2010, in order to provide a central and reference body for issues related to environment, health and safety, and to monitor the implementation of the EHS Management Systems at the Abu Dhabi Emirate level The OSHA is America’s federal agency charged with the monitoring and enforcement of occupational health and safety legislation.
During this USA visit, Abu Dhabi EHS Center representatives presented the OSHA with a background on Abu Dhabi Emirate Environment, Health and Safety Management System regulatory framework, its various projects and the incentives it employs to promote and encourage the application of the EHS system at the Abu Dhabi Emirate level.
OSHA officials praised the Abu Dhabi Government’s efforts for initiating the EHSMS which is based on the concept of risk assessment and performance management, by working with various government entities responsible for sectors such as: industry, transport, energy, health, construction, tourism, and waste.
Also during the visit, the Abu Dhabi EHS team met with OSHA officials who gave the team a thorough background on OSHA’s roles and responsibilities as the USA’s official agency which ensures safe and healthful working conditions by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance. The EHS team was also provided with a tour of OSHA’s facilities.
H.E Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General at Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Chairman of the EHS Higher Committee which supervises the implementation of Abu Dhabi Emirate EHSMS , stressed that the visit also aimed at discussing the potential areas for cooperation between the two entities. He added that in the near future, Abu Dhabi will be hosting representatives from the OSHA in order to give them the opportunity to observe firsthand how EHSMS works with different sectors and to sign a letter of agreement on relevant areas of cooperation.
öAbu Dhabi EHS Center will draw upon the expertise of occupational health and safety professionals and international organizations to continuously improve AD EHSMS regulatory framework, and to raise the national capacities to deal with environment, health and safety issues.
