Abu Dhabi’s Joyce Hunting London Triathlon Glory
(5 August 2010)
Preparations for Wiesbaden and Ironman World Championship on track

Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team’s Rachel Joyce will be racing in her hometown Challenger World London Triathlon this weekend, as she continues her gruelling training regime ahead of the upcoming tougher events, including the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii this October, the sport’s pinnacle competition.

The Challenger World London Triathlon, now on its 14th year, is considered among the world’s largest triathlon events with over 10,000 people taking part, including world-class athletes and approximately 4,000 first timers. Having four distances (Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic and Olympic Plus), the run and swim course takes place at Docklands while the bike course goes along London’s closed roads via the 02 arena, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

“It will be fun to race in my hometown this weekend,” said Joyce, who is coming off a runner-up finish at the Antwerp Ironman 70.3 in Belgium last month. “There isn’t much pressure on me in this race as the shorter distance and drafting format don’t really play to my strengths.

“However, this will surely be a great opportunity to further improve on my conditioning for upcoming races such as Wiesbaden, and I am really looking forward to being on the start line with some big ITU names such as Helen Jenkins and Liz Blatchford!” Joyce added.

Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team, created by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority to further the emirate’s performance athletics’ credentials globally, will compete in more than 40 top international events this season, including Ironman, 70.3 and the French Championships.

To date, five of the seven-person outfit have qualified for the Hawaiian Ironman showpiece, including captain Faris Al Sultan, Andi Böcherer, Swen Sundberg, Pete Jacobs and Joyce, who finished in the top 10 at last year’s event.
