The Department of Copyrights in the Ministry of Economy held a meeting on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) with representatives of various businesses. The meeting aimed at enhancing cooperation between the companies and the Ministry in upholding IPRs and curbing piracy.
The meeting reviewed the application of Federal Law No. (7) 2002 on copyrights as amended by Law (32) for 2006, the implementation of official decisions, the protection of IPR owners and innovators, and process of receiving applications for registration of IPRs.
Mr. Fawzy Al Jabri, Director of Copyright Department, said: “The meeting comes in line with the Ministry’s commitment to strengthen relations with different economic sectors. Safeguarding IPRs is critical to drive business efficiency, and enhance investor confidence, and the Ministry will actively pursue all laws and regulations related to protecting the rights of IPR owners.”
Al Jabri said that UAE has in a leading position in dealing with piracy and intellectual property rights, and is the best in the Middle East and Africa.
The Department of Copyright dealt with 721 transactions relevant to registering intellectual work, 559 transactions for distributors and importers, and 346 pertaining to transmission rights.
The Ministry said 194 requests were made for inspections in addition to 46 complaints of rights violation, and eight others pertaining to IPR violation.
