The Consumer Protection Department in the Ministry of Economy dealt with 2523 complaints in 2009 of which 97% were settled in a friendly manner. The rest were settled through agreements or by forwarding to the judiciary for necessary action, as per the directives of His Excellency Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori – Minister of Economy, to protect consumer rights.
Of the complaints received, 1502 were related to the price charged on food, medicines, and beauty products, representing 55% of the total. Cars were second with 808 complaints. Some 75 complaints were reported about mobile phones and 33 about air-conditioners. There were 40 complaints about tyres and 39 about properties.
The report indicated that the Consumer Protection department periodically monitors the prices of 10 commodity groups covering 650 products through 40 outlets in UAE. A total of 46 items prices are monitored and published on the website on a weekly basis.
H.E. Humaid Bin Butti, Executive Director of Commercial Affairs, Ministry of Economy said: “The Ministry staff carried out 200 monitoring trips in the market, and implemented 32 searches for items that do not comply with local regulations. The Department works to strengthen partnerships between customers and protect their rights.”
