Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and KUSTAR IEEE Student Branch organized the second Engineering Students Ethics Competition 2010 (ESEC2010) at KUSTAR’s Abu Dhabi campus. The event was sponsored by Global Aerospace Logistics LLC (GAL).
The aim of the competition was to provide engineering students with the opportunity to demonstrate their appreciation of ethical issues and responsibilities. The prime objectives of this event were; to foster familiarity with the IEEE Code of Ethics and ethical concepts, to promote a model for discussing and analyzing ethical questions, to provide experience in applying ethical concepts to typical professional situations, and to enhance engineering students’ understanding of their ethical duties as professionals.
Eight teams from four major institutions in the UAE participated in ESEC2010. These were; Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR), UAE University (UAEU), University of Sharjah (UoS), and Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST).
The first prize in this year’s competition was awarded to UAEU team consisting of Alia Al Darmali, Ebtesam Al Mazrooei and Sarah Madi. The team was supervised by Dr. Ali Assi. The second prize was awarded to KUSTAR team consisting of Omran Al-Shamsi, Omar Mohamed, and Ibrahim Yousuf. That team was supervised by Prof. Saleh Al-Araji. Dr. Arif Sultan Al-Hammadi, KUSTAR’s Interim President, said: “This year’s event forms part of our continued commitment to ensure that we provide engineering students with that vital link between the theoretical knowledge gained at the university with applied engineering situations, including adopting the engineering ethics. We believe that the challenges this competition provides will greatly assist students as they prepare to enter the job market after graduation”.
