Sony Science Show Comes To Abu Dhabi
(24 May 2010)
Inaugural Edition Gives Students Opportunities to Explore and Experiment, Fostering Scientific Thinking

Sony Gulf today announced it has brought its widely popular Sony Science Show to Abu Dhabi for the first time, following its unparalleled success in Dubai and Saudi Arabia over the past five editions that have to date drawn the participation of more than 20,000 students from 60 schools.

The two-day event at the Abu Dhabi Theatre that kicked off today is held in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Education Council and led by renowned Japanese scientific entertainer Soichi Nishimura who travels around the world to entertain and teach children about the magical world of science.

Conceptualized to make science learning fun and encourage children to question the natural occurrences that have scientific implications, the show offers Grade-4 school children a wide array of interactive experiments and adds a whole new dimension to scientific literacy in the region.

Osamu Miura, Managing Director, Sony Gulf FZE, said: “This year, we are delighted to extend the Sony Science Show to Abu Dhabi to benefit more children. In 2009 alone the show attracted over 3,100 students from 25 schools in the UAE. At Sony, we believe that an active, hands-on learning approach enables children to engage in the exploratory nature of science and experience the joy of coming up with wonderful ideas, collecting data and searching for answers.”

Focusing on topics such as conduction, air pressure and flight dynamics, students experience the joy of converting text book theories into practical experiments using basic props such as balloons, paper and strings.

During the show, Nishimura will demonstrate the principle of aerodynamics through utilizing a boomerang that navigates across the auditorium and back. The show will feature a series of short experiments as well as a Science Quiz featuring experiments on electric conduction and a human bridge. As the grand finale, Nishimura will explain the principle of conductivity and static electricity, where the young audience will be asked to form a human chain to experience the collective jolt of static electricity.

The show in the UAE capital comes on top of the fifth edition of the annual event that was held in Dubai in collaboration with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) from 12–13 May at the Dubai Knowledge Village Conference Hall.

The Sony Science Shows are part of Sony’s global community initiatives, which include the Sony Explora Science Museums in Japan and China, Sony Wonder Technology Lab in New York, as well as various programmes focusing on areas such as education, environment and health/welfare.
