The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has won the Environment Award 2010 of Euro-Arab Cooperation Center in recognition of its excellent efforts in protecting the environment and promoting the environmental resources.
The Award ceremony was recently held in the opening of the 26th session of the Euro-Arab Cooperation Center at Alexandria, Egypt.
The Award was received on behalf of the Municipality by the Acting Executive Director of Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector engineer Abdullah Al Shamsi, from the President of the Euro-Arab Cooperation Center France Broche, and the President of the External Relations Committee of the Egyptian People’s Assembly and Head of "Protecting the Environment is a Life Necessity" H.E. Mustafa Al Faqi, and the Governor of Alexandria H.E. Dr. Adel Labeeb, in the presence of several experts and specialists in this line.
Engineer Abdullah Al Shamsi expressed thanks and appreciation of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City to the management of the Center for making efforts to open up channels for communicating and sharing knowledge, expertise and practices in the field of conserving the environment and resources; an issue which is obsessing all governments, authorities and organizations while seeking to make concerted efforts to foster a safe, secure and sustainable environment capable of meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the requirements of future generations.
Al Shamsi stated that the UAE made significant advancement in the field of conserving the environment, and establishing the standards of sustainability. "The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City was and is still among the pioneer departments that embraced the polices of sustainable development as part of its comprehensive policies and strategic plans based on a close and integrated approach applied in all projects undertaken, initiatives made and services delivered. These policies & plans are being aligned with the environmental, social and economic dimensions with a view to achieving optimal utilization of resources to make Abu Dhabi city among the cosmopolitan cities featured by a safe, attractive, and sustained environment to cope with all environmental issues and the phenomenal growth seen by the city".
"The adoption of sustainable development policies is evidenced by the broadening of greenery in all areas and suburbs of the city, forestation projects, and the construction of parks and recreational facilities; the number of which is as high as 32 parks and gardens constructed to the highest world-class standards taking into consideration all environmental and health aspects in this field", he added.
He Said: "The Municipality is currently working on the construction of 12 district parks that will be opened in phases during this year, in addition to several other vital projects undertaken with the aim of expanding greenery, and beautifying the appearance of the city to become one of the best cosmopolitan cities worldwide".
The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City is seeking to adopt the latest technologies and utilize them in conserving the natural resources. SCADA irrigation system is considered one of the excellent projects undertaken by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City to conserve energy. This water-control system monitors processes and controls them to meet the requirements and needs; thus enables optimum utilization of water, minimizes water wastage, offers instant detection of water leakage and defects, and communicates related information through the latest communication systems.
Mohammed bin Zayed City is the nucleus of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City’s projects which are based on the concept of sustainability, conserving the environment, and using renewable energy sources. New highly efficient light fixtures will be used on street lighting poles; thus reducing the overall energy consumption, providing constant lighting levels, and reducing pollution resulting from lighting to the minimum.
It is note worthy that the Euro-Arab Cooperation Center is a non-governmental organization established in Munich, Germany and aims at strengthening the relations between & exchanging expertise between Arab & European countries in all academic and technological fields.
