ADMAF Joins The Embassy Of The Dominican Republic On The Occasion Of The 166th Anniversary Of Independence
(28 February 2010)
’Colors of the Dominican Republic’ Exhibition highlights the rich artistic talent of the Caribbean nation

The Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) today announced its participation in the Dominican Republic’s Cultural Week with a full program of artistic events on the occasion of the inauguration of the Dominican Republic’s first Embassy in the UAE, which opens on the country’s 166th anniversary of independence.

Organized by ADMAF, the art exhibition ‘Colors of the Dominican Republic’ opens today at the Ghaf Art Gallery, under the patronage of HE Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The event, running between February 28 and March 14, will feature 33 of the islands’ leading artists who have each contributed one of their master works to this unique exhibition.

Spanning a variety of media, from oils and acrylics on canvas to analogue and digital photography, the exhibition reflects the abundance of artistic talent present throughout three generations of this Caribbean nation.

Beginning with the masters of the Dominican Republic’s 20th-century art movement, the exhibition features works by Ramon Oviedo (considered as the Picasso of the Caribbean), Clara Ledesma (one of the first women to join the country’s National School of Fine Arts), and Candido Bido whose foundation continues to support the careers of young, dynamic Dominican artists.

Inés Tolentino, one of the most renowned Dominican artists, who has flown all the way to Abu Dhabi for this exhibition, has generously offered to donate part of the proceeds from the sale of her works to the Walkabout Foundation, which is contributing to the relief efforts in Haiti.

The exhibition echoes ADMAF’s strategic commitment to nurturing artistic expression and creating opportunities for young UAE nationals to experience global art movements. It also reflects ADMAF’s mission to encourage cross cultural understanding through the universal language of the arts.

“There is no finer way to envision the spirit of a county than through the visual arts. I am delighted that we are able to savor the talent of participating artists and share their commitment to creativity,” commented HE Hoda Al-Khamis Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation. “ADMAF is committed to cross-cultural dialogue and is happy to play a role in this exhibition. I hope that the program will enjoy the same success as ADMAF’s year-round events of art, education and community initiatives that also encourage the exchange of knowledge, ideas and talent.”

The program of events will also feature a series of workshops with some of the Dominican Republic’s most talented artists, curator and critics. Carlos Acero Ruiz will hold a number of photography workshops at Zayed University for students, while Ines Tolentino will guide students of the University through a painting and drawing workshop.
