F&E, the organisers of GESS and the Global Education Forum, the region’s leading education event, brought Science2Life for more than 100 pupils at Raha International School in Abu Dhabi. With the help of leading educationalist Sue McGrath, the students participated in live science experiments and fun focused workshops designed to encourage students to learn about science.
Designed for experiential learning, the innovative workshop wowed its audience aged between 10 and 14 years of age with a series of chemical reactions, explosions, air pressure experiments and demonstrations on how to create rockets and turn straws into trumpets. During the hour long workshop, children were able to explore the science behind everyday household items.
“Student engagement is at the heart of GESS and today’s workshop is the perfect example of how teaching and learning can be brought alive through innovative, hands-on demonstrations. It has been amazing to see the students so enthusiastic about science and see teachers enjoying this interactive and fun focused way of learning. Sharing global best practice and proven teaching techniques from around the world is a key objective of the show and one which benefits teachers and pupils alike,” said Rhona Greenhill, Conference Director, F&E.
Sue McGrath is an acclaimed educationalist who has worked with schools and colleges to develop hands-on / minds-on science kits as well as providing in-service training for teachers around the world. Sue combines her drama training with an imaginative approach to teaching and learning, which captures the imagination of pupils and provides real experiential learning opportunities.
Commenting on the Science2Life Show, Wayne MacInnis, Principal of Al Raha Intentaional school said, “Today’s science show fits perfectly with our school programme. We believe active learning is extremely effective and that learning should be fun . We like to conduct hands on experiments in classes and science should be an inspirational subject that motivates children and injects a sense of wonder about the physical world into their mind set.”
Sue McGrath will be holding a workshop on the first day of GESS entitled “Values and Benefits of Interactive and Cross-Curricular Teaching” in which she will draw upon some of the techniques used in today’s demonstration to explain to visiting education staff how to get the most out of their science lessons.
GESS takes place from 23-25th February 2010 at Airport Expo, Dubai.
