Maximus Air Cargo, the largest UAE based air cargo solutions provider, carried Austrian Red Cross relief cargo to earthquake torn Haiti on Tuesday.
The aircraft, an Ilyushin IL-76TD, left Vienna with approximately 25 tonnes of relief supplies. These included a variety of urgently needed resources including protective equipment, tools and latrines. Vienna International Airport lent support to the mission by waiving landing and parking charges and discounting handling charges.
The aircraft is scheduled to land in Port-Au-Prince on Thursday via the Azores. The devastation in Port au Prince demands rapid humanitarian support following the earthquake that struck on 12 January.
Commenting on this latest operation, Fathi Buhazza Maximus Air Cargo’s President and CEO said: “Humanitarian and relief operations are high on our agenda and we are proud that the Austrian Red Cross has relied on Maximus Air Cargo’s expertise and fleet capability to deliver much needed relief in the aftermath of this earthquake.”
Maximus Air Cargo was chosen by Austrian Red Cross because of its strong track record in emergency relief operations and its experience as the exclusive partner of the UAE’s Red Crescent. In addition, Maximus Air Cargo’s fleet includes suitable aircraft such as the Ilyushin to deliver relief to remote or compromised destinations.
Wolfgang Kopetzky, Secretary General of the Austrian Red Cross, also commented on the relief operation: "In a situation like this we are facing a great demand on humanitarian aid. In order to prevent diseases after the earthquake it is very important to supply clean drinking water and to establish sewage systems. It is good to have Maximus Air Cargo as partner to cope with the logistic challenges in helping those in need."
