The Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) today announced the details of a new cultural programme that will bring together artists from various cultures through an art exhibition, a musical performance and a series of student workshops organised in Abu Dhabi. Held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and organised in cooperation with the “Orient meets Occident” Team, the initiative falls under the Foundation’s efforts to enhance cultural dialogue and to further the capital’s role as a bridge between cultures.
The programme’s main component, the “Orient meets Occident” art exhibition will feature a unique selection of paintings, photography and installations created by artists from the UAE (Karima Al Shomely), Lebanon (Imad Bechara), Canada (J,J. Tebrake ), Germany (Benedikt Steinmetz and Markus Schlee) and Spain (Susanna Llado). The exhibition will run from February 2nd to February 8th at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi, serving as a platform for artistic communication. The opening of the exhibition on February 2nd will coincide with a classical music performance by members of Beit Al Oud, Abu Dhabi’s first Oud academy founded by Naseer Shamma.
The “Orient meets Occident” programme will also engage the public at large in cultural dialogue through a series of student workshops and a daily “Art Hour” with one of the participating artists. Students from the Petroleum Institute and the HCT College will discuss their viewpoints on the cultures of the Orient and the Occident, the relationship between them, the similarities and differences these cultures share. The students will explore the history of the respective cultures and express their visions of the future through painting and writing. The resulting works will be displayed as part of the art exhibition as a testament to cultural unity.
Mrs. Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, said:
“Art is a universal language and dialogue through art helps bring cultures and fellow human beings together. Abu Dhabi’s commitment to enhancing cultural dialogue is reflected in its ambitious cultural vision and its cosmopolitan makeup. ADMAF is very excited to be a part of these developments and to help build bridges between cultures of the East and the West. Promoting tolerance and encouraging the exchange of ideas are at the heart of our year round cultural, educational and community events. I am confident that the “Orient meets Occident” initiative will be another successful platform to pursue these objectives.”
