The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City proceeds with the installation of a number of modern elevators to some pedestrian bridges in the main traffic detour areas on Al Salam Street, specifically within the Tourist Club zone near the city centre.
Elevators will be installed on three pedestrian bridges. The first is opposite Le Meridian Hotel which will be completed during this week. The second is on Road No. 10 between Hamdan Street and Mina Road, expected to be finished and fully-operational by the end of January. The third elevator will be near Abu Dhabi Mall, expected to be completed by February.
The initiative falls within the municipality’s strategy to reduce road accidents and enhance the standards of pedestrian security and safety in Abu Dhabi, as well as to make it easier for those affected by the construction work on Al Salam Street. It further highlights the municipality’s efforts to encourage road users and pedestrians to use the bridges for their own safety as well as to help children, the elderly and people with special needs.
Al Salam Street Projects are one of the largest projects undertaken by the municipality in line with its strategy to develop the city’s infrastructure with accordance to the highest international standards. This strategy includes the development and modernization of the road network and transportation in Abu Dhabi in step with the continuous urban growth of the city. In the future, Abu Dhabi aims to be one of the most modern capitals of the world.
The development of Al Salam Street and the Eastern Ring Road into a freeway will be established through a series of tunnels and intersections to separate the upper levels of traffic. Upon completion, cars will be able to cross without stopping along the island of Abu Dhabi to Mina Zayed, resulting in a smoother flow of traffic and a significant reduction in travel time. The new road network is expected to accommodate more than 6,000 vehicles per hour.
The Salam street project is one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken by the Municipality in line with its strategy to develop the city infrastructure, according to the highest international standards, this includes the development and modernization of the road network and transportation in Abu Dhabi inline with the urban growth in the city, and to contribute to the consolidation of its position as one of the major world capitals.
Municipality of Abu Dhabi city continues to encourage motorists to stay within speed limits and respect all traffic rules. Pedestrians, on the other hand, are urged to use proper crossing areas and bridges provided by the municipality for their own safety.
