Climate Change Fair To Be Held At Abu Dhabi Indian School

As global leaders steam ahead in heated discussions for climate change in Copenhagen, here in Abu Dhabi thousands of students along with their teachers and parents, will be getting a chance to learn more about this global issue.

In cooperation with the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD), Masdar, Gulf Electronics (Phillips), Emirates Wildlife Society-World Wide Fund for Nature and D Club, the Abu Dhabi Indian School’s environmental club Prakriti is organizing a Climate Change Fair on December 18, 2009 at their school grounds between 3 pm and 7 pm.

The fair, which will be open to students, teachers and parents of over 27 schools that are members of EAD’s Sustainable Schools Initiative, revolves around the United Nations Environment Programme theme “Lets UNite to Combat Climate Change”. While global leaders discuss climate change in Copenhagen, , this fair aims to highlight how individuals can unite in their efforts to fight climate change irrespective of the global discord.

With environmental expert speakers from EAD on hand, such as an avian ecologist, a GIS specialist and a marine biologist, students and their parents will be able to learn more about the local environment and about green career prospects in the UAE. Interactive environmental games, organised by EAD, will also be organised to engage visitors in the environmental challenges faced by the UAE.

Masdar and EWS-WWF will be exhibiting at the fair where officials will be on hand to speak to students and parents about Masdar city and the nature of their work. Parents and students will also be able to walk away with energy efficient Compact Fluorescent light bulbs from Phillips.

Students will be highlighting the importance of reducing; reusing and recycling by exhibited their own masterpieces, handmade from recycled materials. Students will also be putting on a fashion show donning dresses made from items that would have otherwise been discarded.

The Abu Dhabi Indian School, which has been active in promoting environmental awareness to its 5,000+ students, was chosen by the Abu Dhabi Education Zone to undertake the pilot phase of the Sustainable Schools Initiative..

The Sustainable Schools Initiative Al Madaris Al Mustadama was launched in September 2009 by Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), with sponsorship from BP. This whole-school initiative capacity builds school communities to address their own environmental impact and help them roll out sustained environmental education and awareness activities.
