Academic leaders from around the world will convene on December 6-7, 2009 to explore the challenges and opportunities for global higher education at a two-day conference, Higher Education in the Global Age, hosted by the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute.

Over the course of the two-day event, four panels will address different dimensions of the topic: the role of universities in fostering intercultural understanding; the need to accommodate surging populations in emerging educational markets; the evolution of universities as interconnected global institutions; and universities as engines of sustainable development.

Among the moderators and panelists will be leaders in higher education from around the world, including: Al Bloom, vice chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi; Jehuda Reinharz, president of Brandeis University (U.S.); Yu Lizhong, president of East China Normal University; Rafic Makki, head of institutional partnerships at the Abu Dhabi Education Council; Allan E. Goodman, president and CEO of the Institute of International Education; John Sexton, president of New York University; Hilary Inyang, president of the African University of Science and Technology (Nigeria); Stephanie Fahey, deputy vice chancellor and vice-president, Monash University (Australia); Wilmot James, Democratic Alliance shadow minister of higher education and training,South Africa; Yves Meny, president,
European University Institute, Italy; and Robert Berdahl, president of the American Association of Universities.

The conference coincides with the dedication of the Downtown Campus of NYU Abu Dhabi, which will admit its inaugural class in the Fall of 2010. NYUAD will be a comprehensive, degree-granting, liberal arts and sciences college with select graduate and professional programs and an institute of advanced research. NYUAD is connected to a major research university and is a portal campus of NYU, which has taken a leading role in conceptualizing the university as a global network.
