Department Of Economic Development Supports Emerging Markets
(17 October 2009)
Major manufacturing and media events signal investment and growth in non-oil and gas sectors in UAE capital

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 16 October 2009: The Undersecretary for the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development will officially inaugurate two major trade exhibitions in the UAE capital on Sunday 18 October at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

His Excellency Mohammed Omar Abdulla will be the VIP guest at the opening of MEMEX (Middle East Manufacturing Exhibition) 2009, the foremost industrial event designed to showcase cutting-edge machinery, technology, services and solutions for the manufacturing sector.

Furthermore, His Excellency, who also holds the position of Board Member with the Abu Dhabi Media Company, will open SIM (Signage, Imaging and Media Show) 2009, the region’s most comprehensive event for the marketing and communications industry.

“In a world weighed down by uncertainty and economic recession, the GCC and Middle East region has emerged as a viable location and partner for finance, business and manufacturing,” said His Excellency Mohammed Omar Abdulla.

“Abu Dhabi is restlessly pursuing its plans for the transformation of its economy and diversification away from oil; events such as MEMEX and SIM provide us with an opportunity to display the products and companies of the emirate along with fostering contacts and partnerships in this region and beyond.”

The Department of Economic Development, the body responsible for proposing the economic and commercial policy of Abu Dhabi, is endorsing MEMEX, reaffirming the government’s strategic commitment to the manufacturing sector and promoting investment in local industry.

“Both MEMEX and SIM signify the UAE’s commitment to the growth of industries which are not necessarily reliant on oil and gas products and services,” said Ed Malkoun, Group Exhibition Director at IIR Middle East, the organisers of MEMEX and SIM.

“Despite the global economic crisis, Abu Dhabi has maintained heavy investment in the manufacturing sector. MEMEX has doubled in size this year in response to the high interest in projects such as Industrial City of Abu Dhabi and Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone, and demand for local and regional industrial production is strong.”

Within the region’s marketing and communications industry, new media usage continues to increase while traditional media and advertising methods introduced to the world in the 1960s face more and more challenges. The SIM exhibition and conference will present solutions for current advertisers and offer a snapshot of the future regional market.

“Companies have been forced to address how their brand is portrayed in non-traditional media, and they’ve found that participation is crucial,” Malkoun commented. “New media is here to stay, and industry professionals must learn how to communicate key messages in non-traditional forms, but more importantly how to shape direct responses to consumer feedback on social media networks.”

“The 2009 edition of SIM will be an effective and inclusive platform for marketing and communications professionals to address benefits, challenges and solutions for the new media revolution, and how to remain ahead of the curve with a complete PR strategy.”
