Women ’Bread-Winners’ On This Week’s ’Nashwa’
(11 October 2009)

This week on ’Nashwa’ is a bold and never before approached issue on Arab screens about the women who support their husbands and family. The Holy Quran states that men should assume guardianship over their families and support those living in their home but the tables are slowly turning in our societies.

’Nashwa’ is aired on Dubai TV every Monday at 22:30 and repeated every Saturday at 18:00.

Mrs. Rihan, an Egyptian pharmacist, talks to Nashwa Al Ruwaini about how her husband refused to shoulder his responsibilities when it came to expenses and their children’s care. He even went so far as to ask her to postpone an important surgery that she needed so he could enjoy his holiday. When she didn’t agree, he refused to pay for his children’s expenses or even see them.

Umm Ahmed from Saudi Arabia tells of how her husband insisted on staying at home without work after losing his high-profile job. He has refused to find another job, relying instead on her mother to provide for him and his household.

A third woman from Morocco, Mrs. Sanaa, reveals to Nashwa how her husband does not work and forces her to give him her salary. Sanaa talks about the breakdown in their relationship and lack of effort for her family’s welfare on his behalf. Sanaa describes how she would like to divorce her husband but is scared of his threats to put revealing photos of her on the internet and accuse her of infidelity.

Providing expert advice are Mrs. Fatima Al Maghni from the UAE, a Social Researcher and Manager of Social Development in Khorfakkan, UAE and Dr. Salem Abdeljalil from Egypt, Undersecretary of the Egyptian Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

’Nashwa’ concludes this week by welcoming the most famous Emirati presenter, Um Saoud.
