Local hero and World Rally Championship (WRC) driver, Dani Sordo has been awarded with the Abu Dhabi ‘Spirit of the Rally’ Award at Rally de Espana after a display of exemplary team spirit and skillful driving on his home soil.

Sordo, the Spanish second driver for the WRC manufacture team Citroen Total, provided an outstanding performance for his fans for the duration of the rally, holding the lead for the majority of the opening two days. The Spaniard had every chance to claim his first ever win on home soil, instead he backed off to ensure Sebastian Loeb claimed the win and provided his team-mate with a championship points boost that could make all the difference in the final driver standings at the end of the WRC season.

The generous driver’s team spirit and his diligent driving has also ensured that Citroen retain the Manufacturer’s championship title with one round to spare. This outstanding result for the team also allows them to draw level with Peugeot as the second most successful team of all time behind Lancia.

The Abu Dhabi Spirit of the Rally award, created by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) is presented at each WRC round in recognition of an outstanding feat of leadership, integrity, respect or teamwork.

“Teamwork is a much celebrated UAE attribute that has been represented by Dani Sordo’s generosity and dedication during this rally” said Ahmed Hussein, Deputy Director General, ADTA. “It is an honor to reward him for his integrity and skill that have been fundamental to his team’s success”.

Sordo was presented with the Abu Dhabi ‘Spirit of the Rally’ Award on his return to the final service. Speaking about his performance this weekend Sordo commented: “It would have been very special to me to be able to win here in Spain, but it is also important that the team do well. It is fantastic for us all to be able to now drive without pressure for the next rally”.
