Creative energy meets the coast is the underlying theme of IMKAN’s beach on Makers District, the new seaside attraction that has just opened at Abu Dhabi’s Al Reem Island. Home to the new Cove Beach - the renowned Dubai lifestyle destination – the beach will be a social hot spot within IMKAN’s Makers District masterplan community, a new mixed-use hub that accentuates the lifestyle qualities of individualism, innovation and entrepreneurialism.
Aligning with IMKAN’s philosophy of ‘placemaking’, an ethos that aims to create soulful places, the beach on Makers District perfectly blends art, aesthetics and activity, taking the beach experience to a whole new level.
The pristine shoreline on Makers District is the only swimmable beach on Al Reem Island, offering guests an array of pursuits along its more-than-300meters of beachfront. Exercise options include swimming in Cove Beach’s pool set right next to the sea, with more adrenaline-fueled activities planned to be available.
Those preferring a restful and rejuvenating experience can make the most of the beach’s verdant green spaces and sandy secluded spots. And if relaxation needs to be combined with an office catch-up, or if the tranquil seaside environment is providing just the right inspiration for that new novel, Makers District Beach provides the perfect setting.
Taking centre stage at the beach on Makers District, is the art piece ‘Purl’. Created by renowned artist Jenny Sabin, the installation comprises thousands of digitally knitted and robotically engineered fibre cells and cones that reflect light and absorb solar energy during the day, then transfers the energy into glowing forms once the sun has gone down. Purl also features a canopy structure with a motion-detecting misting system that helps cool down visitors on hot and sunny days, with the sunlight and spray combining to create a mesmerising rainbow effect.
“The beach on Makers District has been designed to deliver a holistic and diverse beachside experience for Makers District residents and guests, offering action-packed water sports for the energetic, sedentary activities for sun lovers, and a creative environment for both art lovers and casual beachgoers epitomised by the Jenny Sabin installation. All of this, plus the new Cove Beach Abu Dhabi will make Makers District Al Reem Island’s newest beach a must-visit destination. In addition, once fully open, the beach is planned to become one of the capital’s most popular destinations for live music in the UAE’’ said Nigel Craddock, Design Director at IMKAN Properties.
With its prime spot selected specifically for artistic inspiration, Makers District is just across the water from some of the capital’s famous cultural landmarks, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Both the location and overall ambience of the development have been designed to provide inspiration for creatives, entrepreneurs, innovators and those with a strong sense of individualism.
The beach on Makers District forms part of the estimated AED 2 billion phase one of Makers District, a new waterfront community being designed specifically to cultivate creativity through residential, hospitality, commercial and retail space. A 10-15-year project, Makers District will see construction of The Artery commence in Q1 2022 with construction of new projects scheduled to follow in Q1 2023.
Makers District was designed to offer contemporary living in harmony with Abu Dhabi’s creative culture; a place where inspiration is cultivated and nurtured, and where innovation thrives. Ultimately, the vibrant and dynamic development will be home to 3,700 residential units designed to appeal to the millennial mindset and attract artists, artisans and entrepreneurs. A boutique hotel, flexible co-working office spaces and F&B outlets are also included as part of the District’s 18-hectare masterplan.
