Abu Dhabi’s KALIMA Translates Oren’s ’Power, Faith and Fantasy’
(17 August 2009)

Abu Dhabi’s KALIMA project announced publishing the translation of Michael Oren’s book ’Power, Faith and Fantasy’ in Arabic. The book focuses on the history of American-Arab relations from 1776 till the present day (2007).

"The focus on translating the most important historical and literary books is a strategy by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage to present the cultures of ’the other’, in its diversity and difference, to reaffirm the objectives for opening of new channels for Arab readers, and for the revival of the translation movement from foreign languages into Arabic," said Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Director of KALIMA.

The book seeks to provide a deeper insight into today’s US foreign policy as it examines the history of American involvement in Middle East, including attitudes towards Iraq, Iran and the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The 735-page book is divided into seven main parts: Early America Encounters the Middle East; The Middle East and Antebellum America; The Civil War and Reconstruction; The Age of Imperialism; America, the Middle East and the Great War; Oil, War and Ascendency; and In Search of Pax Americana.

The book sheds light on the role of faith in shaping American attitudes and policies in the Middle East, starting with the first missionaries to leave Boston for the region in 1819.

Oren seeks to show that US relationship with the Middle East, which dates back more than 200 years, has been driven by many factors, including imperialist strategies, spreading Christianity, and the romance of popular culture.

The book was translated into Arabic by Asser Hattiba, a graduate of the Department of Political Science and Media at the American University and has more than 15 years of experience in the field of translation at the Politics Strategy Studies Centre of Egypt’s Al-Ahram and other publications.

She currently holds the position of senior translator and editor at the Office of Arabic Service of the Associated Press news agency in Cairo.

Oren, an American-Israeli author, has written numerous works on the Middle East, including the New York Times bestseller Six Days of War.
