Twelve young Emiratis recently participated in the 'Intel International Science and Engineering Fair', Intel ISEF, a global pre-college science competition which took place in Phoenix, Arizona, US.
Of the participating teams, 'Refushield' from Al Mawaheb School - represented by Dhabia Al Hosani, Reem Alhajeri, and Amena Almarzooqi and under the supervision of Dalia Eissa - won the 'United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Award' for their outstanding research and presentation. Refushield won the award for its easily constructed portable shelters that aim to aid and protect refugees and homeless people.
The award was provided by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, and the Junior Academy of Science of Ukraine under the auspices of UNESCO.
The participation of the youth comes as part of the Think Science Ambassador programme, a platform that inspires and empowers outstanding young individuals, who had previously participated in the Think Science Competition, and enhances their ability to address technological issues, by providing them with opportunities to participate in local, regional, and global platforms and competitions.
Commenting on the Think Science Ambassadors' participation at Intel ISEF, Maytha Al Habsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation, said, "I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the wise leadership of the UAE for their unconditional support of youth, especially in the areas of science, technology and innovation. We would also like to thank H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Chairman of the Board of Emirates Foundation, as well as all members of the Board of Emirates Foundation."
Expressing their gratitude and appreciation, the Think Science Ambassadors shared a collective message thanking Emirates Foundation and Think Science Programme for offering them this opportunity to participate and learn as well as represent the UAE at the fair.
Intel ISEF provides an annual forum for more than 1,800 high school students from over 80 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research and compete for more than US$4 million in awards.
