Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State and Chairman of the National Media Council, has congratulated the UAE leadership and H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, after the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, named the emirate of Sharjah as 'UNESCO World Book Capital 2019'.
Dr. Sultan said that this achievement is a great manifestation of Sharjah's investment in culture and reading as a tool to develop human societies. He added that Sharjah adopted intellectual, cultural, and literary development as one of the pillars of the UAE's development process.
"Winning this title affirms the success of the UAE's strategies to strengthen its position as a global cultural beacon that promotes the principles of tolerance and dialogue among civilisations. For the whole year, the country will be the most important destination for intellectuals, writers, and readers from around the world," Dr. Al Jaber noted.
He pointed out that the National Media Council is always keen to stimulate the cultural and media movement as well as the publishing industry in the UAE by providing the necessary support to relevant institutions, Emirati writers, and pioneers of a cultural renaissance. This, he said, will enable them to continually develop and provide content that enriches readers' knowledge, preserves the cultural heritage of the state, solidifies its global standing, and prepares society members and coming generations for the future.
