’Higher Committee For Consumer Protection’ Discusses Regulating Telemarketing
(18 March 2019)

The "Higher Committee for Consumer Protection," chaired by Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, discussed the means of regulating the marketing and promotion of services and goods over the telephone, based on current regulations that apply to access to mobile phone numbers of consumers.

The committee plans to create an advanced programme to monitor the movement of goods electronically, which will help it analyse average prices of goods sold in local markets, as well as inventory levels on local and international levels, through connecting the sales data systems of retail outlets and relevant authorities inside the country with data from news agencies and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO.

The discussion took place during the first meeting of the committee in 2019, with the attendance of Eng. Mohammed Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz Al Shehhi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Humaid bin Butti Al Muhairi, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Commercial Affairs Sector, Dr. Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Competitiveness and Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry, and senior representatives of federal and local organisations that are members of the committee.

The committee’s agenda included several main articles, most notably the committee’s monitoring of its measures to combat counterfeit goods, the fees for showcasing products in retail outlets, and contracts related to electronic and electrical devices that were approved by the committee during its previous meetings.

Al Mansouri said that the committee’s agenda addressed several key issues that affect the real needs of consumers while highlighting its diligent and continuous efforts, in cooperation with relevant authorities, to establish appropriate commercial practices in local markets, raise the awareness of consumers, and empower them to protect their rights.

Al Mansouri affirmed the importance of monitoring the movement of goods electronically, which will provide an effective and positive system to identify the conditions of the country’s markets in terms of pricing, as well as the level of supply of essential goods.
