The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology, ESMA, announced that the authority has issued about 159,000 updated energy efficiency cards for washing machines, dryers and dishwashers since the beginning of this year.
Abdullah Al Maeeni, Director-General of ESMA, said that the authority has succeeded in improving the energy efficiency of electrical appliances, the latest of which are the washing machine and dryer products and the dishwashers, which were implemented late last year, and the associated positive results on society, the environment and the national economy.
He stressed that the legislation and technical regulations carried out by ESMA have achieved remarkable success in energy consumption, and at the level of various sectors with regard to electrical devices.
The implementation of a programme of rationalisation of consumption is in line with the objectives of the 2021 National Agenda, especially in the indicators of sustainable development, the protection of the environment and the balance between economic and social development.
The upgrade of the washing machine, dryer and dishwasher has contributed to a reduction of up to seven percent in power consumption compared with the previous use of the devices, or 2.5 GW, as well as reducing associated environmental pressures, according to technical studies conducted by ESMA.
"The modernisation of the washing machines, blowers and dishwashers was the eighth and ninth update of the energy efficiency projects and programs of the authority, following a similar update in the list of electric pumps last year," Al Maeeni said.
ESMA is currently expanding its energy efficiency programme, including updating the energy efficiency regulations for TVs, water pumps, washing machines, dryers, ovens and vacuum cleaners, which are aimed at achieving more rational energy consumption at the state level, in line with the objectives of the UAE government and the national agenda.
Five years ago, ESMA launched a comprehensive package of state-of-the-art energy conservation programs, including traditional and central air conditioners, washing machines, dryers, heaters, lighting products, refrigerators, water pumps and others. On the level of energy consumption, so that the product with a rating of five stars more efficient.
And the star system in the assessment of energy efficiency in electrical appliances, developed by the ESMA, where the increase in the number of stars to a similar increase in energy conservation, which divides the devices from one star to five stars, according to the ability to save energy.
ESMA’s Board of Directors approved late last year the draft of the mandatory standard update, the Energy Efficiency Statement for Electrical Appliances UAE.S5010-2 on Washing Machines and Dryers, and the draft of updating the mandatory standard Specification of energy efficiency of electrical devices UAE.S 5010-6 on dishwashers after reviewing the impact of the application of these specifications during the past years.
