In collaboration with NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi’s Arts and Humanities division will host the Chamber Music Concert Series presented by Artistic and Music Director of NYUAD Chamber Music Concerts Maestro Rony Rogoff.
Taking place on Thursday, January 31 in the Blue Hall at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi, the concert will feature UAE premiers of Symphony No 15 in A-Major, Op 141 by Dimitri Shostakovich, and Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) by Igor Stravinsky.
In addition, the concert will welcome world-renowned virtuoso timpanist and Director of Percussion Studies Program at NYU Professor Jonathan Haas, along with two students from the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble, marking the Chamber Music Concert Series’ first collaboration with NYU New York.
NYU Abu Dhabi Vice Chancellor Al Bloom said: "We are honored to host this remarkable musical collaboration that brings together members of our own Chamber Music Series and members of the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble to play two extraordinary masterpieces that have never before been performed in the UAE. This is a milestone in demonstrating the contribution that hosting a remarkable global university can make to opening extraordinary opportunities for UAE audiences. We particularly thank renowned timpanist and NYU Director of Percussion Studies Program Jonathan Haas and our own phenomenal maestro Rony Rogoff."
Rogoff said: “As a result of the two successful years of creating and presenting the Chamber Music Concert Series, I am delighted to host in collaboration with NYU New York, the NYU Percussion Ensemble in a ground-breaking performance of Stravinsky ‘Right of Spring’ and Shostakovich last Symphony, a premiere performance in the UAE and Middle East. I am proud to lead the NYUAD initiative presenting Classical and Chamber Music to an ever-growing audience within the UAE.”
The Chamber Music Concert Series was conceived by Maestro Rogoff with the mission of making chamber music more accessible and to nurture classical music artists as well as audiences, with year-long programming. Concerts are held four to six times between October and April every year.
Haas said: “As a faculty member of NYU Steinhardt Music and Performing Arts Professions, I am honored and pleased to travel to NYUAD with two of our outstanding students, for a concert series collaboration that will promote both local interest in chamber music, as well as global interest in a collaboration with the percussion studies program.
“The musical program that has been selected is of the greatest importance, as it features two of the most iconic pieces composed in the early 20th Century by two of the most significant and innovative composers, D. Shostakovich and I. Stravinsky. The arrangements of their monumental compositions, brilliantly distilled to very transparent forces are also an attribute of this concert that is rarely, if ever heard together, as one concert presentation,” he added.
