The NYU Abu Dhabi Institute (The Institute) is pleased to announce an exceptional program of talks and screenings free of charge and open to the public throughout the month of November, as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations.
Established in 2008 as a center of advanced research, scholarly, and creative activity in Abu Dhabi, The Institute assembles academics, professionals, and leaders from around the world to its academic conferences and public program to discuss research areas and topics of local and global significance.
Some of The Institute’s public events include a lecture on Diplomacy in the Age of Social Media and Fake News; a screening which premiers in the Middle East and is in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Art, alongside a Q&A session with Former Guggenheim Board of Trustees President Jennifer Blei Stockman on the role of art and artistic passion in today’s society; and a talk by the historian, writer, and environmentalist Peter Hellyer on the late Sheikh Zayed’s involvement in projects that have led to the preservation of two of Abu Dhabi’s most important nature reserves.
In addition, Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Politics Vladislav Zubok will give a talk titled Reformed to Death: The Strange End of the Soviet Union. This talk will examine economic, political, ideological, and international causes of the Soviet collapse, as well as the role of political actors.
Since its inception, The Institute has hosted more than 700 academic conferences and public events, and welcomed over 700 speakers from around the world. Notable speakers have included former UK Prime Minister The Right Honorable Gordon Brown, internationally renowned Primatologist and Anthropologist Jane Goodall, Emirati Diplomat and Ambassador of the UAE to France His Excellency Omar Saif Ghobash, Emirati Commentator on Arab Affairs Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi, American Actress and Comedian Maisoon Zayed, and Pakistani Novelist Mohsin Hamid, among many others.
