The Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities (DPM) has announced the opening of Hudayriat Recreational Beach.
The beach project, led by Abu Dhabi Municipality, offers residents and visitors the chance to enjoy a multitude of leisure and sports facilities, while spending quality time with family and friends.
It is located in the 3,000-hectare Hudayriat Island, which is south-west of the Abu Dhabi main island.
Hudayriat Beach features four football fields, four volleyball courts, four basketball courts, four tennis courts, two beach football fields, two beach volleyball courts, and an open garden.
At the opening ceremony of the beach, H.H. Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan - Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council - was given a guided tour of the beach, which included its facilities available for visitors.
A short video of the island was also shown to government officials featuring the different stages of its development.
H.E. Falah Al Ahbabi, Chairman of the DPM, who attended the ceremony, said: “The opening of Hudayriat Recreational Beach is part of the vision of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to build a modern city and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s urban development.
“It is also in line with directives of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, following his recent visit to Abu Dhabi Municipality.”
During the Hudayriat Beach opening ceremony attended by several government officials, H.E. Falah Al Ahbabi added that Abu Dhabi Municipality - in line with directives from H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan - completed infrastructure work on the island before the start of the summer.
H.E. praised our wise leadership’s guidance and support to improve quality of life for people in the Abu Dhabi Emirate with infrastructure projects, more facilities and recreational areas, ensuring a happier environment for everyone in Abu Dhabi.
He also said the beach is a valuable addition to Abu Dhabi's unique surrounding islands, recreational and tourist infrastructure, as well as being a preferred destination thanks to its varied choice of leisure and sports activities.
With the aim of attracting large numbers of tourists, Hudayriat Recreational Beach will help put Abu Dhabi on the world map as a top tourist, leisure and luxury destination.
Hudayriat Beach is part of Abu Dhabi Municipality’s efforts to enhance its services and boost efficiency. It is also in line with Abu Dhabi Plan objectives to increase sustainable development.
The beach project demonstrates the DPM’s commitment to continue development in the Emirate and provide high-end services that meet sustainability standards and the needs of every community.
H.E. Saif Badr Al Qubaisi, General Manager of Abu Dhabi Municipality, said: "Infrastructure work on the island started in mid-March 2018 and was completed by the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) at the beginning of May.
“The Hudayriat Beach project aims to provide a new recreational destination complete with a variety of leisure, sports, shops and restaurants that meet everyone’s needs, making the beach an ideal location for tourism and entertainment throughout the year. It is also perfect for hosting many world sporting events on the island.”
The beach is part of the Hudayriat Island development project, which includes 800 parking spaces, 800 temporary parking spaces, a helicopter-landing pad, service buildings, shops, mobile restaurants and cycling track.
Hudayriat Island is one of Abu Dhabi’s main islands near Hala, Bukshisha and Al Futaisi islands, all of which were prime locations for grazing field, fishing or for winter settlements.
The island continues to be a rich fishing reserve on its western and southern coasts, especially for Al Bayah fish, as well as having a vast shrimp fishing area.
It also has many natural protected areas, which ensure calm waters throughout the year. The island has favourable nesting grounds for a variety of bird species, such as gull and reptiles, including turtles that thrive along the island beaches.
