Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation, ADMAF, has said that the Foundation is committed to supporting the publishing industry in the UAE in order to ensure that future generations of authors have the opportunity to create works that will inspire even more young minds.
Commenting on ADMAF's participation in the 28th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, ADIBF, she said, "There is nothing more enlightening to a young mind than a well written story. An early introduction to literature can fuel the imagination for a lifetime. Through our valued collaborations and strategic cultural partnerships that we can nurture a sustainable and accessible literary landscape in the region and build the foundations for the ongoing enhancement of knowledge transfer and cultural development in our nation."
On Friday, 27th April, Emirati artist Jalal Luqman held a book signing of his first novel, "The Armagondas Volume I," a graphic work that tells the tale of the "The Orphans of Armagon" at the Book Fair.
Visual artist and author Jalal Luqman commented, "It took me more than twenty years to complete this novel, and the process of self-publication was a new experience for me as a visual artist. I hope that this novel will offer readers a unique and thrilling reading experience, that fuses magical fantasy with the alternate realm of the Armagondas."
"While the novel is in the genre of fantasy, it also offers the opportunity to reflect upon our reality and take away important lessons for contemporary society. It is an epic tale of the weak surviving against the odds, the victory of good over evil, and the all-encompassing power of hope, even in the face of utter despair. This hope is more important today than it has ever been and we must nurture and encourage it in future generations."
ADMAF’s pavilion at ADIBF reflects the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to the nurturing and development of creative industries in the UAE, and the promotion of cultural dialogue and interaction. ADMAF continues to promote local talent on an international stage to encourage a greater understanding of the UAE’s cultural achievements, both in the region and across the globe. The pavilion features a selection of ADMAF publications that highlight the wealth of creative talent in the UAE and the Arab world such as "25 Years of Arab Creativity", "The Art of Nature", "Portrait of a Nation" and "From Barcelona to Abu Dhabi – Works from the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) in dialogue with the Emirates". The selection of publications also charts the careers of extraordinary artists such as Rachid Koraichi, Hassan Massoudy and Bill Fontana.
Also represented at ADMAF’s pavilion are publications from the annual creative programme, "Riwaq Al Adab wal Kitab". The programme is held in association with the Emirates Writers’ Union, has supported publications of more than 40 works including: ‘Language in Arabic Dialogue’ by Hamda Khamis; ‘A Step into the Void’ by Nasser Al Bakr Al Zaabi; ‘The Sword in Arab Culture’ by Fatima Al Maamari; ‘Harsh Texts’ by Basima Younes; ‘Our Shared Humanity & Forgiveness’ by Dr. Yousef Al Hasan; ‘Instructions of Zayed’ by Abdul Majeed Al Marzooqi; ‘Scribbles’ by Khawla Al Kindi; ‘Fighting Unemployment’ by Sarah Ahmad; ‘WAM’ by Buthaina Ahmad Sharif; ‘Creative Hands’ by Noura Adel Al Banna; ‘Sweetest Pains’ by Atiq Al Qubaisi; ‘Majed & the Pearl’ by Mariam Sultan Al Mazrouei; ‘Essays on Mohamed Al Suwaidi’s Poems’ by Mohammad Nouraldin; ‘Daughter of Zayed’ by Amina Awad; ‘People’s Stories’ by Fatima Al Mazrouei; and ‘Adventure’ By Hazza Ali Abul Reesh.
Throughout the duration of the Fair, ADMAF is running children’s workshops and activities aiming to encourage their creative writings and expressions. The workshops presented by Emirati artist and Zayed University alumnus, Asma Al Rumaithi was the recipient of The ADMAF Comic Arts Award in 2016. Asma won the award with Turning Point, a bilingual comic book featuring a tale about a girl battling with her inner voices.
