ALZAD Pavilion Engages Conversation On Future Food Sustainability
(31 March 2018)

The ALZAD Pavilion: World of Food has curated a series of experiences for guests at this year’s Mother of the Nation Festival, to explore the impact of our nutritional choices on our bodies and the environment.

The exhibition, unique in both content and design and organised in collaboration with Mariam Hareb Almheiri, Minister of State for Food Security, is set in a large, natural space and brings guests face-to-face with the realities of the food production process today. It shows how the traditional, low waste methods practiced by our ancestors, in sync with the environment, have given way to the current mass-production and high waste trends in the industry.

The design of the ALZAD - Food World booth is inspired by agricultural greenhouses and separated into six major areas that take guests on a journey of inspiration in the world of food and its production. The first of the six sections, ‘Legacy’ is a zone that highlights the link between food and Emirati life and culture. ‘Falaj’ provides information on the traditional method of management for water resources that have historically had a positive impact on the development of agriculture in the UAE, and ‘Locally Grown,’ displays the growth of the nation’s food sector, showcasing products from UAE farms.

‘The main food elements and healthy nutrition methods’ section includes informative facts and figure about the nutritional value of a variety of food items, while ‘Current and future food challenges’ evaluates the choices and practices of nutrition that prevail in the community and that may lead to significant global challenges, such as an imbalance in food supply chains and food wastage. As for the ‘Innovate’ section. it highlights the more unconventional methods being used in the UAE and around the world to meet future food security challenges. This last platform provides visitors with a ‘lunchbox,’ the opportunity to prepare a healthy nutritious meal, in order to promote health and encourage appropriate food selection.

The pavilion is a holistic way of presenting food, from the role of nutrition in personal well-being to people’s collective responsibilities that can shape a healthy and sustainable society. While the topics are serious and important, the knowledge is shared in a fun and accessible environment, and in easy-to-understand bite-sized portions, for a thought-provoking discovery of food that the whole family can enjoy.
