One of the world’s only indigenous American Indian dance troupes is on its way to the UAE capital to perform at the Summer in Abu Dhabi family carnival which will run from July 1-August 15.

The Native Nations Dance Theater (NNDT), which represents 12 national American Indian tribes, is making its first appearance in the Middle East and will be a headline attraction at Summer in Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Island.

Headed up by Vaughnda Hilton, a member of the Blackfleet nation and whose Indian name Wanbli Zi Winyan translates into Yellow Eagle Woman, the troupe represents the American Indian nations of Aztec, Blackfeet, Carib, Cherokee, Chitimacha, Creek, Delaware, Lakota, Nanticoke, Seminole, Shoshone and Six Nations.

NNDT is a non-profit organisation that tours the world teaching the history, culture and dance of the American Indian nation.

Among the ‘cast’ appearing in Summer in Abu Dhabi is Tsunka Gleska (Delwin)– which means Spotted Horse Takes the Blanket – a direct descendant of the legendary leader of the Omahas, Chief Elk Head (Hehakupa) and relation of the renowned Chief Sitting Bull who went down in history for leading the Sioux tribe to victory in the Battle of the Big Horn against General George Custer.

“This troupe promises to be a fantastic cultural experience for young and old alike,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Events Section Head, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), which is presenting Summer in Abu Dhabi. “Delwin has performed at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world including The Smithsonian Discovery Theatre, the National Museum of the American Indian and on Broadway.

“Summer in Abu Dhabi visitors will be able to engage with one of the most ancient cultures and it will be a great opportunity for youngsters to learn while being entertained.”

The troupe will appear daily at Summer in Abu Dhabi, which runs at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). The carnival is open daily from 2pm until 10pm on weekdays and 2pm until 12am on Friday and Saturdays. Entry is AED 40 for adults and AED 30 for children under 12. Tickets are available on the door.
