Ahmed bin Saeed Opens MEE 2018
(6 March 2018)

H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chief Executive of Emirates Group, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Fiscal Committee and Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, today officially inaugurated the industry-shaping Middle East Electricity, MEE, 2018.

Hosted by the UAE Ministry of Energy & Industry, and under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, MEE returns to Dubai World Trade Centre, DWTC, amid soaring regional demand for power and increasing transformation towards clean, smart energy solutions.

Running until 8th March under the theme ‘Energising the Industry’, the 43rd edition of the event, is expected to attract more than 62,000 industry professionals.

Touring the 80,000 square feet exhibition, Sheikh Ahmed was joined by other senior officials and toured some of the latest innovations on display at the three-day mega show. Some 1,500 exhibitors from 66 countries, supported by 23 dedicated national pavilions, including Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, China and more, are displaying the latest technologies, products and services across five dedicated sectors: Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Lighting, Solar and, for the first time, Energy Storage and Management.

With demand for power across the Gulf rising rapidly as a result of increasing populations, expanding economies and climate change, the GCC Power Market Report, prepared by Ventures Onsite for MEE, forecasts that Gulf countries will invest US$131 billion in the sector in coming years.

"As a long-established weathervane for the constantly evolving regional power industry, hosting Middle East Electricity is a natural fit with the strategic objectives of the ministry," Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry, said. "The UAE continues to lead the regional agenda in developing and driving growth across the robust regional power sector and we look forward to enhancing the country’s leading role through our enduring partnership with Middle East Electricity."

Anita Mathews, Group Director-Industrial Portfolio at event organisers Informa Exhibitions, said, "The show has evolved into an innovation driver across the global industry by providing a stage for the world’s thought leaders, government policy makers, academics and top executives to discuss successes, issues and future challenges for the regional and global power industry."

Running alongside MEE 2018, Informa is also debuting the Global Smart Energy Summit, GSES, a high-level summit featuring more than 110 high-profile speakers and some of the biggest corporate champions in sector transformation. Opened by keynote speakers from Smart Dubai and Tesla Inc., other global thought leaders set to address the progressive summit include representatives from the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory, US Department of Energy, NASA and regional energy ministries. GSES sessions cover a broad spectrum of topics relating to smart energy solutions, with three days of conferences and focused splinter tracks expected to attract over 700 attendees exploring reform patterns across the entire power spectrum.
