ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based institution dedicated to high-quality, value-based education, today (June 24, 2009) held a special ceremony to present certificates to the first batch of candidates who underwent training in basic first aid, conducted jointly by the university’s Training and Continuing Education Centre (TCEC) and First Support Business Services (FSBS). This follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two organisations to jointly offer training and international certification in basic first aid to citizens and residents of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.
Marianna James, Director of First Support Business Services and a registered nurse, said: "Basic first aid training provides people the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond effectively in an emergency situation until the emergency medical services arrives. Generally, there is a lack of awareness for the need for this type of training within the community at large, whether it is in public areas or in the workplace – or even at home. Being able to recognise signs and symptoms of a heart attack or a stroke for example; or perhaps how to manage choking in a responsive victim can save lives.”
Basic first aid is a proven cost-effective, safe and simple way to save lives in an emergency. Millions of people are hurt or killed worldwide from injuries or ill health every year. In the UAE alone, according to a recent report, heart attacks accounted for 29 per cent of all deaths in Dubai in 2007 – and a Dubai-based study has revealed that one in four heart attack patients is less than 44 years of age.
Dr. Hassan Younis Al Sabea, Director, ALHOSN University, TCEC said: "The primary mission of the Training & Continuing Education Centre at ALHOSN University is to provide innovative, quality, flexible programs and services responsive to the learning needs of the community. In this regard, we have partnered with First Support Business Services to establish a first-aid training program that caters to the distinct challenges and requirements of the UAE community.”
"This new initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to promote the welfare of the society through various community-based programs. We will continue to leverage our world-class expertise, state-of-the-art facilities and network of partners to establish programs that support the growth of our community, and ultimately strengthen TCEC’s status as one of the top training providers in the UAE," added Dr. Hassan.
ALHOSN University’s Training and Continuing Education Centre TCEC serves adult learners and business professionals with a variety of evening, weekday, weekend, and online professional certification programs. Aside from the newly established first-aid certificate, the Centre also offers a variety of courses and customized training programs to meet the needs of clients.
