The Abu Dhabi Festival 2018 welcomed the return of "Festival in the Park," the capital’s major outdoor creative and musical event, with three days of workshops, film screenings and eclectic live performances in the relaxed setting of Umm Al Emarat Park.
Running until 31st March, 2018, the festival features a line-up of globally renowned names and an immersive multimedia experience, including "Pianographique," which features works by ground-breaking composers.
The festival features live music from India, Egypt and Kuwait, along with visual arts and creative activities for the whole family. The festival also celebrates the cultural wealth of India as its "Country of Honour," in the presence of Navdeep Singh Suri, Indian Ambassador to the UAE. Its first night showcased Indian exuberance and flair, starting with the best of Bollywood dance in a special workshop hosted by the prolific choreographer, Gilles Chuyen. The Raghu Dixit Project, one of India’s leading live acts, arrived in the capital, after performing over 1,500 concerts across 30 countries, with their contemporary take on Indian folk music traditions.
Two pioneering Arab musicians transformed the park tonight with musical pieces that combined the contemporary and the traditional. Multimedia artist Zahed Sultan staged his latest work, "Hiwar," a dynamic and innovative audio-visual piece that combines traditional pearl diving music with interpretive dance, live percussive instruments, chorus singing, and contemporary arrangements for piano and cello.
The festival will continue on 24th March with a special performance honouring the legendary Kuwaiti comedy icon, Abdulhussain Abdulredha. Performed by some of the country’s emerging creative talents as part of the "UAE Theatre Circle" training programme, the unique piece is inspired by the iconic works of the late comic.
Egypt’s marimba queen Nesma Abdel Aziz and her group will close the festival with their fusion of contemporary and classical music.
Visitors can also buy traditional Emirati goods from local artisans and witness a mural installation with a special painting by children with autism.
