An exhibition celebrating ten years of the internationally recognised Emirates Photography Competition has opened to the public at Manarat Al Saadiyat on Saadiyat Island. Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the 10 Years of Emirates Photography Competition exhibition, which was inaugurated yesterday (Monday) by HE Saif Saeed Ghobash, Director General of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, will run until 31st March 2018.
The exhibition features a selection of the winning works and the best entries from the past ten years of the competition under the theme ‘Ten’. Over the past decade, the Emirates Photography Competition has developed the photography community in the UAE whilst receiving entries from all over the world under the auspices of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP), the American Photography Association, the International Association of Photographers (IAP) and the Union of Arab Photographers (UAP).
The exhibition is divided into two main sections: ‘Spotlight’ features a selection of works by ten of the best Emirati and international photographers dealing with various areas such as nature, wildlife, portraits, people, sports, movement, journalism, abstraction, colour, monochrome, approximation, sceneries and travel. The second section, ‘Through Time’, includes a selection of photographs that were shortlisted in previous editions and that met the criteria and terms of the competition.
The exhibition opened on 27th November at Manarat Al Saadiyat with a talk entitled Spotlight featuring presentations by seven Emirati photographers and winners of previous editions of the Emirates Photography Competition. The group of photographers shared their portfolios and presented their winning concepts. The event recognised 16 photographers who have been awarded titles by the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) for their distinctive works and effort to promote this artform. The titles include “Artist FIAP”, “Excellence FIAP”, “Excellence FIAP Bronze”, and “Excellence FIAP Gold”.
On 17th January, the series of talks will continue with Journeys in Photography, a panel discussion led by expert photographers Abbass Kapadia and Mohammed Arfan Asif.
