The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) organized recently the 2nd workshop on "Climate Change Policy for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi" to review the final draft of the Climate Change Policy, which has been amended based on the federal and local stakeholders’ observations. The policy was prepared under the supervision of the Agency’s Environmental Policy Sector in cooperation with the international expert Dr. Bill Dougherty of the Stockholm Environment Institute, who is specialized in the development of policies and programs for the climate change.
During the workshop the policy general framework draft was discussed in the presence and participation of number of representatives of various stakeholders at the local and federal levels. At the end of the workshop participants agreed on number of effective outputs which will reflect on the final version of the policy which is expected to be completed within this month.
The general framework of the policy focused on the key objectives and the necessary measures need to be taken in the sectors that have impact on climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in those sectors, which include thirteen sectors such as coastal zones, environmental regulations for dry land, water sources, energy sector, transport, waste management, food security, agriculture, industry and residential sector.
Dr. Jaber Al Jaberi, Director, Environmental Policy Sector, speaking at the opening of the workshop said that this Climate Change Policy for Abu Dhabi Emirate reflect the principle of partnership in the local and national issues and aims to discuss and examine the general framework of the final draft of the policy, which were prepared after inserting other stakeholders observations and remarks.
He noted that this is the concluding workshop in the preparation of the climate change policy, where the final document will be submitted Abu Dhabi Executive Council for approval.
Al Jaberi said this initiative was inline with Abu Dhabi Government’s vision and Abu Dhabi Policy Agenda, where the general framework of the Climate Change Policy for Abu Dhabi Emirate is the essential foundation of which we will use to built legislation, regulations and practices needed to reduce the impact of this phenomenon and to reduce carbon emissions at the local level through the support and the participation of all sectors involved in the Emirate.
