The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced yesterday (Monday 4, May 2008) the names of the winners of the Annual Environmental Competition 2008-2009 at an awards ceremony held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Jaber Eidha Al Jaberi, EAD’s Director, Environment Policy Mr. Irshad Lawati, Deputy Managing Director of Shell Abu Dhabi, and other officials attended the ceremony where 60 students from Government and Private Schools were honored.
The Competition was sponsored by Shell Abu Dhabi and organized in coordination with Abu Dhabi Emirate education zones and Abu Dhabi Educational Council. It was open to all Abu Dhabi school students, from Kindergarten level to Secondary school level and was held under the theme CO2: Kick the Habit. The competition focused on Climate Change and highlighted the message to students that making positive lifestyle changes can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
About 194 Government and Private schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region Educational Zones participated and the total number of entries submitted reached 1,597.
Government and private schools entries were judged by a panel of officials selected from TAQA, Abu Dhabi Educational Zone, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ittihad Newspaper, Khaleej Times, ADNOC, ADCO, Emirates Wildlife Society, EAD and others.
The winning entries were displayed at an exhibition in Khalidiya Mall. Furthermore, EAD will be publishing the winners names and work on its website www.ead.ae.
Dr. Jaber Al Jaberi delivering EAD opening speech said that the popularity of this competition has grown each year. It began with only 47 schools and 200 entries in 2000/2001 and today has 194 schools participating with 1,597 entries.
He thanked EAD’s partners for helping to implement the competition, Shell for sponsoring the competition and Khalidiya Mall for hosting the exhibition.
Mr. Nejib Zaafrani said “We are very proud of our partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi in this unique initiative, where children express their understanding and awareness about the environment. The children’s works presented in the competition provide a clear example of the knowledge and awareness they have gained over the year - such knowledge will remain with them and they will be able to share it with their families and friends.”
Mr. Marcello Larizza, Manager of Khalidiya Mall said, “Indeed we are very pleased to partner with Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi in creating awareness about the environmental issues and creating a platform for the youth to express themselves creatively. Environmental issues are very important for us and for our CSR policies."
