Abu Dhabi’s Kalima Publishes Book On Italian Mafia
(4 May 2009)

Abu Dhabi’s translation project Kalima announced the publication of the first Arabic copy of the book "Gomorrah: Italy’s Other Mafia" by Roberto Saviano.

The original book revealed information previously unknown about the mafia and sold more than one million copies in one year.

Kalima, a translation initiative by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), seeks to provide Arab readers with the latest publications in the international scene.

The book describes the amazing facts discovered by the journalist Roberto Saviano, during his investigations of the Camorra mafia in Naples.

The Camorra mafia is one the most secret and biggest criminal organizations in Europe.

But Saviano managed to infiltrate the structure of this criminal organization, which is involved in a number of illegal international economic affairs, exposing what few had dared to show before.

He provided strong evidence against the mafia, without fear of consequences.

In addition to the numerous awards the book harvested, among the best-sellers in the forty-two countries where his work was translated, the author also won many death threats from the Camorra mafia, which vowed to eliminate him during the Christmas celebrations in 2008.

This prompted the Italian Minister of the Interior to provide him with heavy security, but Saviano could not bear the situation and decided to leave Italy.

The book was also turned into a movie of the same name, and it was at the forefront of the films nominated for an Oscar for the category of foreign films.

Many international figures sympathised with Saviano, including Nobel laureates who have issued a statement supporting him and his right to live in peace.

He was also labelled as "national hero" by the famous novelist and philosopher Umberto Eco.

Saviano was delighted that his book had found a way to Arab readers.

"I am pleased that the book Gomorrah will be readable in Arabic. Any writer would be happy to see his work translated into Arabic - the language of high poetry and prose - and this explains the excitement I am feeling," he said.

"I hope, no, I am confident, that the readers of the Arabic version of Gomorrah will find a personal and appropriate way to combat organized crime," he added.

The book was translated into Arabic by Maha Izzedine.
